UNH Trash 2 Treasure is the first student-led, self-sustaining campus waste reduction program in the country. T2T serves as the pilot program for the Post-Landfill Action Network, which represents a national expansion of this successful campus program.
Trash 2 Treasure, a program of UNH's Student Environmental Action Committee, was started in 2011 when a group of undergraduates noticed dumpsters overflowing with waste at the end of the school year. They learned that when students move out each May, the amount of waste sent to the local landfill jumped from a monthly average of 25 tons to a whopping 105 tons.
The students fundraised $9,000 to launch Trash 2 Treasure, a program to reduce waste by collecting useable items at the end of each school year and selling them back to students at a giant yard sale over move-in weekend. In it's first three years, UNH T2T has:
- Diverted over 100 tons of waste from UNH's waste stream
- Achieved over $30,000 in sales
- Donated 5 tons of food and clothing to local shelters
- Saved UNH $10,000 in waste disposal costs
- Saved students and families an estimated $125,000 by selling goods at a steep discount compared to local big-box stores
At the Trash 2 Treasure sale over move-in weekend, we sell thousands of useable items donated or ditched by last year's outgoing students. The sale includes furniture, electronics, clothing and accessories, school supplies, dishware and kitchen appliances, decorations, and much, much more.
