About the PLAN Team:

We are a 7-year-old organization with 11 staff members across 4 states. Our average age is 24 years old. We come from academic backgrounds such as Public Policy, Marketing, Sustainability, Philosophy, renewable energy and more. We come to our work with passions within and beyond waste, like food security research, social justice conference organizing, design thinking strategy, sustainable fashion and non-violent direct action, just to name a few. We are southern belles, dumpster divers, queers, marching band nerds, and crafters working toward the common goal of a just and sustainable world.

We work to maintain a collaborative leadership structure by developing and continuously revising our self-governance system, establishing co-directorship, and holding semi-annual full staff retreats. Our Background and Vision for the Future:

PLAN was started in 2013 by recent college graduates to help other students run campus move-out projects that reduce waste and earn money. Since then, the organization has grown to national reach and a $500,000 annual budget, focusing on building and supporting student leadership in the movement toward zero waste and against the Linear Consumption Economy. The organization is currently staffed by 10 full-time team members and 1 part-time team member, with 4 major project focuses; see the links below to learn more:

As a young organization working within the growing zero-waste movement, we are constantly expanding our operations and our impact. Below are a few of our current priorities: 

  • Strategic planning, towards a new 5-year strategic plan, to be released in early 2022. This effort builds on our 2017-2021 plan and on ongoing assessment of our programmatic impact and future goals. We anticipate the new Co-ED will play a significant role in finalizing the development of this plan, to be released following the January 2022 Winter Staff Retreat. From onboarding through the date of the release, the Co-EDs will work together to track organizational impact and set future goals and expectations. Beyond the strategic plan release, the Co-EDs will manage tracking and reporting systems, ensuring that projects continue to advance the mission.
  • Balancing a variety of levers of change for zero waste, from equipping students with change-making tools to directly advising campuses on infrastructure developments. 
  • Recognizing and supporting folks from historically marginalized identities who are under-supported in the zero waste movement.
  • Maintaining financial stability through diversified funding streams that include mission- aligned, revenue-generating projects and long-term, stable fundraising.

2021 PLANternship Program

The PLANternship Program is BACK! We have three internships open for Summer 2021.

What is the PLANtern Experience?

Interns with PLAN can expect to work closely with other young, passionate, creative individuals in a collaborative digital environment. They should be ready to have their views challenged and expanded, to add their own voice and ideas to the zero waste movement, and to leave a lasting mark on this organization as a whole. As an organization with a strong social and environmental mission, we hope to engage our student interns in the fast paced, value-driven environment of a national non-profit, while expanding their knowledge of Zero Waste and socio-environmental movements in general. While this year’s PLANternship is completely digital and all PLAN staff are totally digital right now the PLANterns should expect the routine of #officelife to be regularly broken up by activities that include virtual “field trips”, lots of memes, and bonding as a team.

  • Digital trainings and conference opportunities (including free attendance to PLAN’s 2021 virtual Students for Zero Waste Conference)

Logistics
  • Hours Per Week: Full-Time, 35 hours/week (includes flexible time off)

  • Compensation: $5,250 stipend for a total of 10 weeks, in bi-weekly paychecks (approx $15 an hour)

  • Start/End Dates of Internship: Mon. Jun 7th, 2021- Fri. Aug 13th, 2021 (10 weeks)

  • Location: Remote. The majority of our staff are based in Philadelphia, PA. But we do not currently have a physical office space due to COVID. We will not expect interns to re-locate or meet in person for the entirety of their internship. We are able to provide limited financial support for interns who need improved tech or internet access during the course of their position.

  • Accommodations: We recognize that students are spending a lot of time in front of screens and are willing to incorporate long breaks, flexible work hours, and other accommodations into this virtual internship as needed. 

  • Eligibility: Eligible applicants are current undergraduate students or recent graduates with a passion for grassroots environmental issues, social entrepreneurship, and student leadership for positive social change. Applicants who are selected must be able to commit to the start and end dates listed above.

Movement Tools Organizer

PLAN is seeking a student with an interest in the role of research, educational content development, and information organizing. This person will primarily be responsible for analyzing and collating information about various topics essential to student organizing on a campus, such as leadership and facilitation skills, movement-building tools, and zero waste program case studies. They will be tasked with building and up-keeping PLAN’s Airtable databases. They will work closely with PLAN’s Director of Engagement, Jensen.

Candidates will be asked to perform the following tasks:

  • Build out our campus directory of over 200 case studies of successful zero waste programming (adding tags, organizing information, etc.)
  • Research and summarize case studies to incorporate into the Program Case Library Airtable
  • Prioritize and categorize educational materials into a spreadsheet
  • Research existing databases containing content related to social and environmental justice (e.g. guides on facilitation and anti-oppressive leadership) to culminate into a new and effective resources bank/database
  • Highlight relevant educational resources across PLAN’s social media platforms to communicate this information to students

Preferred skills:
Ideal candidates for this position will demonstrate:

  • Research and organization skills
  • Strong written skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with using Google Sheets (or similar) and/or Airtable
  • A passion for social justice topics and student organizing

Expected learning:
Over the course of the internship, the Movement Tools PLANtern can expect to gain the following:

  • Experience with targeted research and summarizing data
  • Leadership development skills: communication, decision-making, creativity, visioning
  • Deeper understanding of the intersections between movement tools and the broader Zero Waste Movement/ Environmental Justice Movement
  • Knowledge of campus waste infrastructure
Campus Contract Investigator

PLAN is seeking a student to explore the scope of campus contracting with private vendors that play a role in waste systems on campus. These types of contracts are (which may include but are not limited to): waste hauling contracts, pouring rights (aka beverage) contracts, and food service contracts.The student’s primary responsibility will be to analyze and organize campus contracts in order to identify common campus vendors across the university/college landscape. They will work with PLAN’s Campaign Director, Young, to develop resources to help students access and understand contracts on their campuses.

Candidates will be asked to perform the following tasks:

  • Research the scope of campus contracts across colleges and universities in the U.S.
  • Find trends in sustainability clauses in such contracts
  • Examine specific contracts to learn about best and worst practices
  • File FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests with school officials
  • Identity best practices related to zero waste and plastic elimination as stated in these contracts
  • Create guides to help other students to access and understand contracts on their campuses
  • Interact/take calls/network with Campus staff who control contracts (i.e. campus waste facilities directors, campus liasons from contracted vendors like Aramark/Sodexo)

Over the course of the internship, the Campus Contract Keeper PLANtern can expect to gain the following:

  • Knowledge of how contracts work on college campuses
  • Skill to file and follow up on Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests
  • Knowledge of sustainable practices on campus
  • Understanding how campus contracts relate to the Break Free From Plastic Global Brand Audit
  • Understanding Extended Producer Responsibility policies
  • Networking opportunities within the Break Free From Plastic Campaign
Students of Zero Waste Storyteller

PLAN is seeking an intern to coordinate a new social media campaign highlighting and telling stories of student leaders in the Zero Waste Movement. The student leaders highlighted via this project will also be awarded at PLAN’s 2021 Students for Zero Waste Virtual Conference. This intern will work with PLAN’s Director of Communications, Isabel, to compile bios and photos from nominated students leaders, create shareable content about the program, and provide outreach support for the Students for Zero Waste 2021 Conference. This internship has the potential to continue part-time into the Fall by providing social media support throughout the virtual conference.

Candidates will be asked to perform the following tasks:

  • Support in the development of the Students of Zero Waste awards program
  • Create promotional materials to be shared on social media, newsletter lists, and with campuses
  • Compile submissions and assist in the awarding process
  • Assist with social media and outreach efforts for the 2021 Students for Zero Waste Conference

Preferred skills:
Ideal candidates for this position will demonstrate:

  • Familiarity with managing social media accounts, particularly Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter
  • A passion for connecting with other students and campuses
  • Experience with graphic design and the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Strong writing skills

Expected learning:
Over the course of the internship, the Students of Zero Waste PLANtern can expect to gain the following:

  • A deeper understanding of the student-led Zero Waste Movement
  • Experience developing creative social media campaigns
  • Knowledge of how to effectively use social media to engage an audience
  • Outreach strategy skills
