The Students Taking on Oil and Petrochemicals (STOP) Fellowship centers students that attend universities in Appalachia, a region threatened by an impending petrochemical buildout. This year-long fellowship provides them with direct support, mentorship, and resources to fight the influence these corporations have on their campus and community.

Applications are open for the 2023-24 Academic Year!

This paid, year-long organizing fellowship is for students in the Appalachian Region & Ohio River Valley. Priority consideration is given to students that come from frontline communities, marginalized identities, and students that attend schools near frontline communities. The Fall semester is focused on training and skill development, while Spring is focused on creating change on your home campus.  Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, with priority given for students submitting before May 1.

Since its creation in 2020, the STOP Fellowship has supported 12 students (6 each year) to organize over 1,200 hours in the Ohio River Valley. These students have received over 300 hours of direct advising through PLAN. Though each cohort is made up of only 6 students per year, their respective campuses receive PLAN membership which provides mentorship, thousands of pages of programmatic manuals, and trainings and events to every single student at these schools. In total, PLAN has reached over 147,550 students in the Ohio River Valley since the STOP program was founded in 2020. Organizing at the level of higher education represents a critical intervention that social movements have utilized for decades; they are often pillars of the community and raise leaders of the next generation. It’s important that these leaders are poised to challenge the belief, perpetuated by fossil fuel corporations, that our future involves continued reliance on these limited resources.
